Merelani Mint Garnet 6.43 ct

Design and Precision Faceting by Roger Dery

We know this as Merelani Mint Garnet due the minty color and having been mined in the famed Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania. The region is known for producing Tanzanite, but in December 2010 a pocket was unearthed which produced magnificent specimens like this one.

The design is my own, and would be characterized as a classic oval outline. I’ve used a brilliant style crown and incorporated a series of receding step cuts on the pavilion. The design was created to capture and intensify the color.

The crown is extruded from a standard round brilliant. The pavilion is a series of split mains which end up with a culet that is neither to a point, nor is it a typical keel. The elements selected were used to enrich the hue and add to the tone – which is what it did.

Burma Peridot weighing 10.14ct and measures 12.0×12.0mm.

It is a fairly deep stone, so the light path is long – having it appear very rich in color.

Additional design information: The pavilion technique incorporated step cuts, but I adjusted angles and sizes of facets to emulate what takes place on an Asscher cut emerald cut. For the crown, there are a small number of facets that follow along the line of a “Brilliant” design seen on square cushions from the early 1900’s.
