Hi David, I’m trying a little test here. A post of a photo in the comment section, and I placed your tourmaline in a very light background – without touching the gem itself. This is a common technique used for print and many of the nicer web sites selling stones.
The photography tab at the top of the home page will eventually access small or large tutorials on a number photo techniques for people to use. I’ll be adding one or so per month. I may use specific stones that I shot and talk about how it was done in detail – or at least break a photo down into smaller steps. I also hope there will be contributions from other photographers as well.
There may be smaller tutorials on photo options for this web site too. Optimum file sizes, formats, html, etc.

WOW! I like that look. I don’t think the generic photo-editor that I use is capable of doing that. I would need to get photoshop to do something like that I would think.

I’m using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for this, I think you can find a copy on ebay for under $50. If you want Photoshop Elements 7 or higher I think the price may be closer to $100.
The steps that I use are very simple, and I’m sure there is more than one way of doing it.
