This stone was my entry into the United States Faceters Guild 2010 Premasters Single Stone Competition. It earned a score of 99.4243 out of 100 and won the Gold Medal in this division. The above photos are just for show, as this stone represents one my proudest accomplishments! One World Gem generously supports the USFG entrants by offering to photograph the entered stones at no charge.

Rough 2 Refined Gemstones
EDITOR’S NOTE: After publication of the original photos, the bottom two pictured above, I increasingly became unsatisfied with the result. The photos have a washed out look and undefined focus. I asked David Dawson if he would be kind enough to send me the stone again for a reshoot – the top photo.
Pale blue stones for me prove to be the most difficult to accurately capture. The definition and bright crispness of the gem is more accurately realized but now the color seems to have shifted to slightly darker than the original stone in hand. Through the camera view finder the stone matches the photo exactly. However, with different lighting angles and remix of lighting, I believe the color temperature has shifted a bit. I’m very satisfied with the photo, especially the group of three taken together. There is more work to do as always though to better capture the true gem. -Jeffrey Hunt
